Out for the moment.....

Just so you know, I have not been able to post very much due to a computer problem. We purchased a new laptop for Christmas due to the one I use broke a hinge and it hanging by a thread, or should I say a wire! I am waiting for Comcast to come and hook up our new Internet access this week before I use the new computer and risk any sort of fun loving new virus's invading it. So until then, I will be off line for most of the week.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday and Happy New Year!

March of Dimes

In case you did not notice, I have added a new button on my sidebar for the March of Dimes. I will be participating for my second year in the walk, and for a great cause. My daughter was born a month early, and I know several friends who have had premature births. Right now, I have a family member who could be in the same position. I am sure many of you know someone who has had the same experience, or you personally. It is a wonderful opportunity to help future generations.

Several years ago, my Sister-in-Law gave me from Williams Sonoma a 3D Christmas cookie cutter set that I have never attempted to do. It is very cute, and I knew it would be time consuming. The set made trees, snowman, reindeer and a sleigh. This was the year I was going to make my first attempt to trying it out.

The recipe was an easy gingerbread recipe, surprising since I always seem to get ones that are difficult or some ingredient you have to go above and beyond to find. The hardest part about this was baking several parts at different times! You had to coordinate and plan out what you were baking, along with quantity. Don't attempt this with a 2 year old not napping, a dog hovering around you for scraps and a cat trying to do the same! One batch can yield four sets, if you plan it out and use all of the excess. The recipe says only roll out twice, I completely ignored that and used all that I could!! Why would you waste good dough?

All went well, except for a few casualties that hit the floor and taking more time due to the above listed. I got a great icing recipe on line that hardened up quickly and looked good, decorated them that night and wanted ready to give them out to the mom's, one set me and one to my sister-in-law in NYC whom we visited this past weekend. I had made enough for one tree, one snowman, a sleigh and 4 reindeer per set, with a few extra legs in case of breakage. This picture was taken of my set, BEFORE I went out on a few errands. I blocked it from the dog with several dishes and was pushed way back on my server. Well, that does not stop my border collie, if she can smell it, she will get it. I came home to find only a snowman and a tree you see in this picture. Not a crumb left of anything else! I should know better since one year I made a gingerbread house and she ate the roof, windows and all of the yard decorations she could reach. Live and learn. Everyone else got their sets, no dog issues with them.

Speed decorating for the holidays

I can tell you that when I was working full time, I had all of my decorations up the weekend after Thanksgiving along with my Christmas cards written out and mailed two weeks after that. I am not sure if it is just the feeling that the holiday creeped up on me or not, I had NOTHING done until last night.
Went over to my gal pal Suzanne's house and had dinner, let the girls run around to tire themselves out and we both were keeping our fingers crossed that they would be in bed early for some quality "me" time to get a few things done. It worked for me! I made two sets of cookies, will show them off when I download the pictures, put up all of the garland, my "It's a Wonderful Life" village, and completely decorated my main down stairs area.
As for the tree, we had gone to NYC to visit my brother and sister-in-law this past weekend so that delayed a tree. This Saturday is the day, seems so late! In the past years, we have had a Baking Day party on this Saturday, but since a few years ago we have postponed this for a couple of years, kids, babies....call it a break....what ever. So this Saturday night we are having a few friends over for a small gathering, set up my father's train which I am excited to have now and share with my daughter. As for decorating the tree, normally I have many glass ornaments, not this year with both a kitten and a 2 year old! I will let Bugaboo Girl put decorations that are not breakable on her level and for the cat to bat off and the glass will be WAAAAAAYYYY up top!

Champagne Food Friday

Sorry I have been away for a couple of days, have been doing some speed knitting to make a few Christmas gifts which have been taking up some time. On this Champagne Food Friday, I thought I would show off the horse cake I made for Bugaboo Girl's 2nd Birthday. It was a white cake from scratch, chocolate ganach frosting with butter cream decorating frosting. It was so good, and was topped with some vanilla ice cream. Needless to say it was all gone by the next day.

Kiva, a great gift!

I have posted about Kiva before and of course I have the button on my side bar. I am amazed at how my money I have donated is the hardest working money I have ever given. I get paid back and re loan it to someone else. Here is my newest donation, Rita in Peru.
Rita is a 28 year old single mother. She lives with her son and her mother who helps her and keeps her company. 10 years ago she worked selling clothes in Lima, but after having her son it was impossible to continue working, so she thought it best to return to her hometown. She worked on the farm to save up money, and has now opened a small clothing store. Selling these garments is more profitable than selling food and in addition, she has no competition. Rita is very happy with her business. This is her fourth loan from Kiva partner Microfinanzas Prisma. The money will be spent buying clothing for all ages, especially children.

Grandma D's Tree and Wreath Farm

Decorating for the holidays can be both fun, memorable and a chore. Finding the time between the parties, open houses, baking cookies, wrapping the gifts, shopping and cooking can be a challenge. I love to take the time to pull out all of my decorations, break out some eggnog, put on the Christmas music and give everything that personal touch. It is the sites and smells that I love about this time of year. Included in this is decorating with greens. Not everyone has all of the evergreen trees in their yard or the time to make their own wreaths and center pieces. This is why I let Grandma D's Tree & Wreath Farm help me out.

Wreaths are a wonderful addition to the holiday decorating. I love to hang my holiday wreaths up in several places such as the outside of my garage, front door and also inside my house on the back of the door! Why just have everyone who drives by the house be the only one to see the beauty of a wreath, I want to be able to see it everyday myself. Grandma D's Tree & Wreath Farm has wreaths come to you packed carefully in a box, ready to be hung. The wreaths look and smell fresh, lasting well into the holiday time. I love the use of various mixed greens, pine cones and the ribbon for the added touch. This is not just a new company that popped up overnight with a farm stand on the road, this is fifth generation family farm who supervise from the planting of the seeds to the final product you purchase. Looking for a gift to send to a distant relative or even as a house warming? Grandma D's Tree & Wreath Farm will be more than helpful picking out the wreath or center piece you would like to give, making sure they receive it in a timely manner.

Grandma D's Tree and Wreath Farm is offering a little something extra for you to help on the holidays, free shipping! All you need to do is enter the code W0834 on your order. We are all looking to save a little money in these financial times, free shipping is a wonderful offering.

Polliwalks, sweet feet!

I have posted before that my daughter is a shoe fanatic! It is in the genes as I am, my mother is and also my grandmother. When we go shopping and walk around the shoe department, she cannot help herself in grabbing some shoes that are fun, bright and new trying them on and running over to the mirror to take and look and show me. It is so much fun to see.

Recently I was fortunate to have the opportunity to review Polliwalks. These clogs have a very cool twist on the clog scene as they are bright colors and are designed with an animal look and appeal you cannot resist! When I got the box, I had to see my daughter's first reaction when we opened them. We had gotten the Lady Bug in Bubblegum pink and the Firefly in raspberry. Of course, her first reaction was right on the money, "Oooooooooo.......mama......new shoes!" and she immediately started to point on what the shape of the shoe looked like. What makes Polliwalks shoes so unique is they are shaped like animals such as a Lady Bug, Frog or Gator. They have eyes, air holes as part of the design, back straps and the bottoms of the shoes even have detail on them such as the Lady Bug has little lady bugs imprinted on it. This makes it even more fun to leave foot prints behind at the beach! They all have a smile which in turn makes the kids and you smile when you look at them!

The big surprise was the new Polliwalks spring introduction which was the raspberry firefly. The tail lights up when the child walks, jumps or runs in them, how cool is that! They also have adorable little antennae to enhance the big smile and bright eyes on the front. My daughter just would not take these shoes off and walked around the house saying "blink" the whole time. The two spring styles of Fish Lips and Firefly are available for holiday time at select Dillards stores and Zappos if you want to get a jump start on your gift giving for summer fun.

The Polliwalks molded clogs fit really well, I had a size slightly bigger due to I want to have my daughter be able to wear them in the summer but for now she is happily wearing them around the house with socks on. Oh and don't worry about cleaning them as they can be either tossed in the washing machine or just rinsed off outside after some good wet muddy use!

Old sweaters into new hats

We all know about reduce, reuse and recycle when it comes to grocery shopping, bags, and second hand clothing. But how about taking unwanted clothing and making something completely different out of it giving a new use and look? Now that is a spin on reuse and Fox Island Fancywork does just this by making felted hats from sweaters.

As soon as I caught a glimpse of Fox Island Fancywork Etsy shop, I knew their product was something very special and unique. These are not ordinary hats but works of art. They take sweaters and scarves, felt them and put together a design that is unique and one of a kind. Many hats come with felted applique flowers, buttons and stitch detail that goes above and beyond what I would expect for the such a reasonable price. I love the detail thought out that the lining inside is a satin type of material because we all cannot stand an itchy sweater so why would we wear one on our head! I love to wear hats and the only tough decision for me was which design I loved more, they are all so much fun! For the final touch, Fox Island Fancywork sends your hat with a cedar disc for storage to keep the moths away, you don't get that when you buy a sweater!

The Ultimate Party Meatball Recipe

I will be forever busy on the week of Thanksgiving. Not only do we seem to take on projects around the house but we are celebrating Thanksgiving, my Bugaboo Girl's Birthday, my sister-in-law's Birthday and my parents anniversary. Wow......that is a lot within one week!

As you can imagine, it is an eating fest, and it is not even Christmas yet! Besides baking cakes and pies, I like to have some quick appetizers for family/friends who drop in and also all of the events that take place this week. I do spend a lot of time in the kitchen but want to spend more time with everyone socializing. I was excited to be able to try a new recipe out some of my favorite ingredients offered by Heinz and Ocean Spray. They came up with The Ultimate Party Meatball recipe. What makes this recipe even better is there are only three ingredients to quickly throw together for a savory appetizer. All you need are meatballs, Heinz Chilli Sauce and Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce. I had the perfect event to try this out which was Bugaboo's 2nd Birthday party. I was pressed for time to finish frosting her cake, set up the balloons and put out the appetizers before we had a house full of people. Got the recipe and made it in no time flat! The meatballs were a hit and love that tangy taste. Thanks to a great combination of ingredients and time saving recipe to make my party even better!

Stop by The Ultimate Part Meatball site for other cool recipes, tips and also enter a sweepstakes to win $3000 ultimate party! I know I could use that help for the holidays!

Make Black Friday a feel more colorful

I cannot stand the use of the statement of 'Black Friday', suggesting a dark time in our holiday season and when it really means retailers coming out of the red and into the black in their books. We all know that right now times are tough and we have to get creative in many ways. This Champagne Food Friday focuses on Murdock Design and their colorful use of fabric and linen to make a Tea Towel you may just hate to get dirty.

Let's face it, we all have dish clothes that we covet, pull out when the guests come, iron, look perfect like they are never used. I have to say that Murdock Design are so wonderful in colors and designs, I would do exactly this with them! The choice of linen colors are bright, warm and appealing. They then coordinate them with such unique and fun printed designs, adding an extra special touch. The details are finished off with coordinating stitching and turned edges. These Tea Towels are well worth the price and would make a wonderful open house gift, house warming gift, grab bag or even to a special mom who seems to be doing dishes all of the time!

Burps clothes with a personal touch

Many first time moms seem to do the same thing when it comes to registering for products we think we will need when the baby comes. We go to our closest baby super store and walk the aisles registering for anything we think we may need. I know that the burp clothes at these stores are usually, basic patterns we have seen that are mass produced, thin and not very pretty. Is this because we think spit up does not deserve to be on something pretty? Last time I checked we have detergents and washing machines that get out these type of stains, even if they are left overnight! Treat your self and your baby to burp clothes with a personal touch from Girlie Bird Boutique, an Etsy shop of course!

I am all for making a basic item we use a little more fun and imaginative. The Girlie Bird Boutique does just this by personalizing a burp cloth with a letter and a name. They do not stop there with the wonderful details, the letters are patterns stitched with matching colors, stitched pictured detailing and a fun edging to add interest. Many people would have thought adding a pretty coordinating ribbon at the edge was enough but to also add a crochet style edge takes this product to the next level. Did I mention that they use Gerber Premium 6-ply cloth diapers for durability? Hence the reason they are thick in the center, right where you need it to be! I also know that I get bored of using the same bibs, adding a matching bib to the set makes a wonderful baby shower gift that all moms can use.

WIN IT!!!

Stop the brown bag and go pretty

I am all for Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. I am also for something fun, meaning that if I am going to carry my lunch in a bag, it is not going to be plain and boring. This is where Rick Rack Queen has taken the brown bag to new heights!

Oil cloth is such an awesome material for tablecloths, place mats and now lunch bags! Easy to clean, fun patterns and wears like iron. Rick Rack Queen has got the design of the Lunch bag down to a tee! I was so impressed with the thought, detail and ease of use from the stitching to the choice of patterns. The bag edges are detailed with a ragged pattern, there is a side pocket to put your utensils in, I have also fit a small bottle of water there. There is a handle in which the flap of the bag goes under. The inside is lined with a corresponding color pattern and the size is quite roomy with 8 1/2" in height giving room for a tall beverage. And for the final touch, on the flap is the matching ric rac! This makes an awesome office gift, girl friend gift or even a child gift for a non fridge needed lunch. I love all of her pattern choices, they have such a vintage look.

Tackle it Tuesday

The BIG Kitchen mini remodel! This is a huge tackle in very short time line for just a painting project. This is the color I will be going with. Pittsburgh Paint's Butterfly Bush, a yellow tone. As you can see, my current walls are blue. This will obviously take two coats of paint! And here is what I have to do to prep.

  • Patch the ceiling, there was a not so pretty hole in it
  • Scrape a TON of trim, old houses seem to have more trim work
  • Sand down the butcher block counter top
  • Remove all old contact paper
  • Get all of this done and paint before Saturday, a BIG challenge!

Watch for pictures and updates. Needless to say, I will not have much time for blogging.

Good things come in small sizes

My daughter likes to rummage through my handbag looking at all of my things as if they are new to her, describing them always starting out with the words "This is...." and telling me in her best description what it is. She loves to peak in pockets, small bags and just plain dig. Recently I put in a small pouch from Northwoods Felt with a toy horse in it when we went on a long trip in the car and can I tell you, she thought it was the best thing going! She went beyond the "This is..."statement by describing the small pouch as soft pretty and pointed out the colors. Who knew I would get so much use out of a small pouch!

Northwoods Felt is a small business that makes these wonderful little pouches in various patterns and colors. I knit so I know the hard work that goes into this and felting is an extra step that does require time, material and wear and tear on your washing machine! These little pouches are a work of art and have so many uses. They could be used as a gift bag, a discovery pouch for your toddler, storage for a special item in your dresser or just to carry something a little extra in your handbag. As for the holidays, this is a great stocking stuffer and yes, why not give it without having to wrap a small gift, save the paper and time! Either way, it is a special pouch and definitely will be appreciated from anyone you give it to.

Clorox 2 For Color gets a boost

As a mom, I am constantly fighting the battle of the stain on clothing. Laundry seems to be more involved when you have a child since stains seems to occur more frequently and soaking is almost always a given. I know I find myself cringing when my Bugaboo Girl is eating something that has potential to permanently stain her clothes or Art Class happens to have the lovely blue goop that all kids love to play with and you know the blue will most likely be a new color in that wardrobe. If I have my favorite purple shirt on, I want it to stay that purple color as long as possible and not have a red tomato stain added to it!
Recently I had the opportunity to try Clorox 2 Stain Fighter & Color Booster, a little different than the original Clorox Bleach that I use for all of my whites and cleaning. I was able to put it to the test right away. It was Friday night, pizza night, something my Bugaboo Girl loves to eat. Unless you put an art smock on your child, the bibs are just not big enough to protect them from food stains. Bugaboo Girl managed to get some tomato sauce on her sleeves and on the neck line of her green and pink flower shirt. Got to try out the Clorox 2 Stain Fighter & Color Booster, poured some on the stains, rubbed them in and started a load of laundry. Normally I would have to soak them overnight but when I took it out of the wash, I was surprised! The stains were gone and the color was still bright. The true test would be to wash these clothes several to see if the colors will stay. I am going to continue the use and hopefully this will save me from having to buy new clothes and using that money toward another art class! Check out the some of the stains they have on the http://www.daretobecolorful.com/ and you can also submit your best stain pictures!

WIN IT!!!

Want to try a free bottle of Clorox 2 Stain Fighter and Color Booster? Here is your chance, I have 4 coupons for four winners! See rules below.

It's Aloha Friday

Wow, another week put away in this year, another week closer to the holidays and less than a week away from Thanksgiving! Here is the question this week.

Will you be going out shopping on Black Friday or using the Internet to make your purchases for the holiday?

I will be doing most of my purchases by the Internet, rather than heading to the malls. Don't have to spend money on gas and fight the crowds.

Aloha Friday is brought to you by An Island Life.

Refresh'n Dryer Towels

I know I am not out of the norm stating that it seems like all I do is laundry. My routine is every morning I go around and pick up all of the cloths in my daughter's room, my room, the bathroom and pile them up on my dryer. What makes it worse is that my laundry area is actually located in my kitchen, not very visually appealing. So anyway I can do less laundry is a good thing. I often will wear my pants more than once before washing them, especially if I was not wearing them to work outside in the garden! I had the opportunity to try out Refreshn' Dryer Towels, a new way to cut down on the use of washing clothes and bring them back to life by using your dryer to steam them. What a great idea, and I was pleasantly surprised!

The Refreshn' Dryer Towel is a non-toxic chemical free way to clean your clothes and does help reduce the amount of water you use washing your clothes. Each towel can be used up to 25 times, what a savings! And.....laundry generally takes 45 minutes to wash and another 50 minutes to dry where as the Refreshn' Dryer Towel takes about 10 minutes! What a time saver, energy saver and a little extra coin for you to spend for the holiday! Let's face it, during this time of year, any extra time spent not doing the laundry is a good thing.

So enough of the facts, I suppose you are wondering if this really works? Well I put it to the test on each member of my family. First up was my corduroy pants and a few cotton shirts. I found myself surprised that they were softer and fresh, enough to wear easily for two more times! The tougher trial was my husbands jeans and dress shirts. The reason I say this is because he likes his jeans hung dry, you know, they can stand alone without any help. I can say that even he was surprised by the end result, and did not mind that they were soft. Last but not least, the Bugaboo Girl's jammies, so soft she did not want to take them off, which was a challenge since we had to go to music class and get ready!

The end result is the Refreshn' Dryer Towel is an amazing product for saving time, money and being green with daily chores!

Banner your walls

My mother-in-law had a great idea for my daughter to learn how the letters of her name. She suggested to write each letter on a piece of paper and hang it in her room so she can see it every day and you can spell it with her. Why not take this suggestion to the next step by hanging it as a banner. I found an Etsy shop, The Sweet Unfolding, that does just this, in a sweet way.

There is something always fun about hanging a banner on your wall, especially if it is decorative and special. The Sweet Unfolding makes handmade paper banners for all occasions. This is not like the paper banners you buy for 'Happy Birthday' with all sorts of colors. These banners are incredibly detailed using quality card stock layered with three layers, cut into a pattern and finished off with a matching ribbon for hanging. I was so impressed with the feel, look and design that I could see this as a wonderful gift for a baby room or a play room. The Sweet Unfolding offers custom banners with choice of colors, shapes and sizes to match your needs. I guarantee you that this gift will not be duplicated at a baby shower! Check out their web site here for other wonderful products.

Wall appeal

I am not a "white wall" type of person. My house is 1930's and I love the fact that each room is a bright color. Murals are a great way to add interest to a room. Not all of us are crafty enough to paint or cannot afford to hire someone to do the work. The solution is vinyl decals from Lewa's Designs.

Vinyl decals are an amazing way to add a personal touch to a room and the great aspect about them is you do not have to paint over it to change the theme. Lewa's Designs have fun, clean and creative decals such as the Swirly Bird family, free spirited and sweet . This would be great in a bedroom or even a baby room. I love the fact you can choose the colors for parts of the designs and the ability to add extra pieces for some fill. Looking for a specific design or want a theme you do not see? Lewa's Designs do custom orders where you designate what you need and they would love to work with you. Start your new year off with a new room for a minimal cost.
