Update on Uconn Ag. Center Fair

Stopped by, only a viewing from 2-4 with the auction at 4pm. They had plants for sale, baked goods and the Uconn ice cream was $2(free last year). What was disappointing was the raffles in which you had to be there for the drawing. I may put some feedback to the 4-H chapter on that one. I am pretty sure they have another fair later in the season because I remember buying corn stalks from them so probably September. Sorry no pictures.

The Grand entrance to my backyard gardens

I was given a rose trellis for my birthday from my mom, grandmother and Eric. Very ornate and will now be a new part of the master plan, as soon as I can figure out where it will go!

Asparagus report.....

I figure if Martha can do it, why not me. I have a very old asparagus bed that was evidently about 20 feet long and now three small patches about 2ft long each. We never really knew what to do with it and after speaking to a few people also have them in the area, I now know how to maintain the beds. So the picture you see will hopefully be much improved next year!

Uconn Agricultural Center Fair

We are lucky to have the Uconn Agricultural Center right down the road from us. Today they are having a 4-H Fair and Auction tonight. The Fair starts at 2pm. I am going to pop over and check it out since last year they had some raffles, master gardeners on site for any questions and a plant sale. I will post pictures after my visit.

Not sure about the weather? Spring is not very predictable in New England. I know that in the past three weeks the weather men have not been very accurate with forecasting rain. The only job you can be wrong and still have a job! Check out Intellicast for your local forecast and radar. I like looking at the radar loop, especially when it is snowing!

'Hello, Cupcake!' again...

My Aunt gave me the 'Hello, Cupcake!' book for my birthday, thank you! FYI, they do have a Hello, Cupcake! blog site for you cupcake crazed people. I will link this only under the cupcake web sites. This should be interesting trying my hand at some of the recipes.

So you want to build a log cabin, mini size. Move over Lincoln Logs, Roy Toy is the better choice to build a log cabin. Why may you ask? This toy happens to be made in the USA and in Maine! The classic play sets come in the tube like container and you can't beat the price!

State Park Pass....what a deal!

I plan on taking Victoria to the beach this summer. The cost of entry into the state parks can average around $10 a day! I am buying a Seasonal Park Pass from the DEP for $50! Wow, a deal from a Government agency, they actually exist.

A massage does wonders.....

I am giving a shout out to my Sister-in-Law Deb's web site and business(whom has been my friend since 5th grade!). She is the owner of Sound Body, LLC Therapeutic Massage and has been in business since 1996. She offers various techniques such as deep tissue, stone and pregnancy message. I was fortunate enough to utilize Deb for the pregnancy message which helped considerably with my sciatica.

If you shop on the web at major retailer stores, you do not always know if there are any promotions unless you are on their email lists. Rather Be Shopping offers a quick look up by retailer of any deals and codes affiliated with them. It is always good not to have to pay for shipping or get an extra percentage off!

Kudos to the poll workers.....

I just want to say thanks for a great day yesterday working with a wonderful group of people at the polls. Putting our political differences aside, we were organized, well fed and enjoyed each others company! The 5am to 8pm went extremely fast considering we only had a 17% turnout. This was just a practice run, just wait until November!

The voters in Haddam understand.....

Just and FYI, the budget for the school failed in Haddam and passed in Killingworth, which unfortunately pushed the budget vote to pass overall. But the message is now evident that it is time to talk about breaking away from the district school system.

I find it frustrating buying a new dress. It seems it is usually the wrong time of year for what is available and for what ever you have in mind is not available! I did luck out and find a dress from Boden that I foresee will not go out of style and did not break the bank! Another common problem with dress shopping.......

Thank you Deb!

My Sister-in-Law Deb gave me a new piece of bake ware for my birthday, she knows me well. It is a Garden Patch Cake pan. I know Victoria loves the shapes and you can beat the recipe on the packaging which is Zucchini cakelets (is that even a word?)!

Yup, another year older. Although I do not feel like it, Victoria makes me feel younger. I am going to the Ivory for lunch my friend Suzanne and her daughter Hannah(Victoria is coming of course!). The weather is supposed to be beautiful and I plan on having a Gin and tonic when Eric gets home, sitting on a chair overlooking the backyard, exciting isn't it!

National Beverage Day

With the weather being so delightful right now, who would not want to celebrate this holiday! Funny it falls right after Cinco de Mayo. Lately my favorite drink is a Gin and Tonic. Margarita's will always be my favorite. Check out Webtender for recipes on these or try something new. Can you find what beverages are made from these ingredients in the picture?

Yarns Down Under...Deep River not Australia!

I consider myself a beginner knitter having only been knitting for three years. My grandmother had taught me when I was really young then I had asked her again to show me the basics. She loves to telling people how I make sweaters only after a few years of knitting. I stay local when it comes to buying yarn and taking classes. Yarns Down Under is a wonderful yarn shop that has a wide variety of yarns, classes and the owners are very helpful with finding yarns to suit your need. Check out their Knitting Retreat event they offer with three days of all about knitting!

GOTV!!!!

Today is our School Budget Vote in the Town of Haddam. I am working the poll from 5:15 am to 8pm. What drives me crazy is seeing these signs suggesting that if you vote no, you do not support not only our future but the kids! So it is o.k. to be fiscally irresponsible, as long as you vote yes to spending money for our children with no accountability. I see how it works...and I HAVE a child!

Bird siting in my back yard

Saw a Baltimore Oriole in the crab apple tree today. I hear them but never quite see them. Just an FYI, one of the really easy bird guides to use is the Golden Book "A Guild to Field Identification Birds of North America". I have a lot of guides and this one I seem to go back to the most.

Baking cupcakes and decorating them do take time, something everyone has less of these days. New York City seems to have quite the list of places to purchase cupcakes. You can see the lists at Cupcakes Take The Cake and also find other major city listing. They also have more design ideas and recipes, again as if there is time!

I am amazed how much it costs for baby clothes and for such a short period of time to wear them. If you do not want to hand them down to someone, one option is to make a memory quilt and Ticche & Bea has a baby clothes quilt kit that you can sew yourself or have them sew it for a fee.

Organization always helps in everyday tasks. I love my accordion organizer from Galison that is only 6"x4"x1" and keeps all my coupons, receipts and GC's together instead of in the bottomless pit of my handbag. The price is very reasonable, great patterns and they all have a small statement on the bound side(Mine says "For it is in giving that we receive" with the holiday theme). I have found them at Homeworks but it is pretty rare!
