Learning Social Skills the Fun Way!

As a child, I can remember my grandmothers teaching me Old Maid, Slap Jack and Go Fish. All simple and fun games which shared quality time with my grandmothers. We did not have board games that taught social skills of sharing, patience and listening(one that can be selective as we all know!). We relied on learning these skills from our family, and we seemed to have the time then to do so.

Move forward to the present time, now, time is so precious and our schedules are packed! Both parents are working, there are activities planned throughout the day and dinner time seems to be the time that family is all together. So when do you teach these social skills that are crucial for interaction between not only other children but all adults? Hasbro has come up with a solution by introducing Noodleboro, three games for a fun way to teach these social skills to our children!

Right now, I am starting to reinforce sharing with my daughter so it could not have been a better time introducing the Learning to Share Fun Park Game. The game comes with four fun park theme pieces, a book and a music CD which my daughter loves! This game not only teaches sharing buy giving gold star tokens to other players who do not have, but also teaches confidence and compassion. I can see her playing this with her friends and the same social skills being passed on.

I will be looking forward to purchasing the other two editions to the Noodleboro Collection which are the Pizza Palace Game and The Picnic Basket Game. I know my daughter will love the pizza game since she currently plays with a make believe pizza, passing out slices to mommy and daddy! Wow, I am already getting the love of sharing!

Mom Central is raffling off 200 of the Noodleboro games to moms, sign up here and enter for a chance to win!

It's Aloha Friday.....

In reference to today's post, this is something that I can be pretty self conscious about. I know I am not the only one so here goes!

Do you prefer sleeves on a dress or spaghetti straps? In other words, do you mind baring arms and shoulders?

Looking For A Dress?

I am always surprised how hard it can be to find a dress you like and for a reasonable price. I went to a Vintage dress shop and found some fun things, not appropriate for what we needed but I would definitely come back to take some time to browse through! Never rule out the unexpected!

You gotta love this little number with the red feathers puffing up the lower area of the dress, would be great for a New Year's Eve party!

Sea Cadets

Because I posted on my Random Meme about Sea Cadets, and have received comments on not knowing what it is about, I thought I would post a picture!
It was a organization like Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, except is was part of the Coast Guard. We learned everything about boating, got our boating licence, sailed(that was some adventures) and did some great field trips! This would be a wonderful program to have again, especially since the amount of kids boating now is even more then when I was in the program! Yes, we even marched in parades! You can see me smiling at the camera in the top picture.

Bugaboo Book Review

I love to look at birds and mommy likes to use big glasses called binoculars to see them up close. This is why my book review this week is Owl Babies by Martin Waddell. There are three baby owls on the cover that are fuzzy and cute.
The book starts out with an introduction to the three baby owls known as Sarah, Percy and Bill and where they live. All is good in the owl nest until one day they wake up and owl mommy is gone! Bill, the youngest owl, seems to be scared and calls out "I want my mommy" while Sarah, the oldest owl, is left to comfort both siblings, giving reasons why mommy is gone. Bill tries to be brave but still states "I want my mommy", while Sarah gives reasons why she will be coming back.
I am listening, looking and wondering "Where's the mommy?", keeping me on the edge of Daddy's lap and then the surprise comes, that makes us all cheer and clap for joy!
I love this book and it always makes me want to find out where mommy is and will she be back to her baby owls.

Soft Appealing Illustrations

I love to browse through Etsy in search of fun homemade items. This time, I stumbled upon an artist named Kristiana Pärn who born in Estonia in 1979, moved to New York City to study illustration at the School of Visual Arts and now lives and works in Prospect Heights. Her shop is Krisblues and she offers prints from an original acrylic illustration measuring 6.5"x6.5" with a white frame border.
What lured me to her prints was the feeling of calm, soft and sweetness all in one. The colors were visually appealing and you could easily put together a series framed on a wall for a child's room. One of my favorites is the Napping Under a Marshmallow Tree which just makes you want to crawl in bed and cuddle up next to the bunny. Kristiana also gives details about the original paintings how they made.

Each is printed on enhanced matte paper with archival inks, dated, signed and shipped with care in a bend-proof cardboard mailer.
Kristian Pärn has graciously offered one print of your choice for a giveaway! See rules below.
1. Stop by Krisblues and browse her wonderful selection of illustrations. Post a comment on this post which one you love and why. Don't forget your email address!
2. US addresses only, one post per person.
3. EXTRA CREDIT!! Post on your blog this giveaway linking BOTH Krisblues and Life is like Champagne. Then post a separate comment on this giveaway with the link of your post.
4. EXTRA CREDIT!! Grab my button and place it on your blog, posting an additional comment with a link to your blog stating you grabbed my button!

Customer Service Has Not Died Yet!

My previous career, before being a mommy, was in the retail world. I had worked with Macy's, Coach and Waterworks, yes only three companies because I actually did what a lot of people do not do these days, stayed for a long period of time and was devoted to each company! Pretty rare in the retail world, and I also managed to keep my staff with me each time. It was always about Customer Service, simple things such as writing a note, making a phone call to let someone know about a sale or even knowing when NOT to say something on the selling floor. There is no "The product speaks for itself", that is a bunch of crock! If you love the product, you portray this to your customer! Try selling a $35,000 bathtub over the telephone without the customer even seeing it, yup I have done it!
In our household, we own five pairs of Maui Jim Sunglasses. I have three and my husband has two(use to have three). You might think this is a little excessive, but there is a reason and it is the customer Service of Maui Jim Sunglasses that we continue to buy them.
I bought my first pair in 1997 when we lived in Maui. My husband had just started working at Kaanapali Estate Coffee in the Marketing Division and both companies were represented at a golf tournament in Kaanapali. I was lucky at the time to have score this pair for half the price due to a little networking. I was hooked from then on! The company has an office and on-site repair in Maui so whenever I had an issue with the glasses, would pop in, they would fix them immediately while I wait. I still own that pair of sunglasses today, and would love to know if anyone else has a pair of sunglasses longer than me!
When we left Maui in 2000, both my husband and I owned three pairs. Many of the fisherman out there wore these glasses for comfort and glare on the water. I cannot tell you how many times my hubby broke his pair while fishing and managed to move back here with the same pair. I was wondering if we would get the same service on the mainland as we did on Maui. Well, Maui Jim certainly got put to the test again and since we have been back here, I have sent both of our glasses back to be repaired at least six times, with only once we paid for some major repairs, which was still cheaper than buying a new pair of glasses! I was charged the freight cost of $8.95 for the repair, that is it! What always surprises me that when I list what needs to be repaired, they also repair issues not listed and replace at no charge. Now THAT is customer service and a great warranty! My gal pal Suzanne stated hers were broken from "HB" sitting on them, she wrote Maui Jim Sunglasses, they called her for the repair info and commented they could hear "HB" talking in the background! It's the little details like this that we do not see much of in the retail world, MANY stores need to get back to the basics. This is why I continue to buy Maui Jim sunglasses and promote thier wonderful product!

Tackle It Tuesday

Sponsored by 5 Minutes for Mom.

To bring you up to date, two weeks ago I was Tackling the front porch, and here is the progress of that project.

Now I am tackling what was originally on the porch and will be placed on my new patio, whenever I get to that project! This is an old glider my mom had given us when we moved in. It desperately needs some attention, sanding, painting and a cushion! I think a floral or leaf pattern would be nice with the white, any suggestions?

It Runs In The Family!

I can say that genetics are passed down from generation to generation. Take for instance the love of shoes. My mom has a closet full, all organized, some that I consider to be old but are so well taken care of. Unfortunately, we cannot wear each others shoes because she is a size 5 and I am a size 8W. Her mom, my grandmother is the same, and she also has a smaller size foot, I must have gotten my size from my father's gene pool!

Well, I know my daughter is the same way. Shoes is a word she has no problem saying and loves to put them on. When I received a new pair of See Kai Run shoes for her, she immediately opened the box and started chanting "shoes, shoes, shoes"! These shoes are soft, flexible, comfortable. How do I know this? Because my Bugaboo Girl grabs these shoes first out of her many choices and hands them to me to put them on! I was first introduced to See Kai Run shoes when I had won a pair a year ago, cute white sandals with flowers. They are the same quality leather and soft feeling, even after hard use.

This fall, See Kai Run is also introducing a soft soled baby bootie line which will start your infant off right for the feel of a wonderful pair of shoes!

WIN IT!!!!!

See Kai Run has generously offered a pair of your choice in either the See Kai Run Collection or the Smaller Collection! See rules below.

Stay Out of the Kitchen!

This is the first thought that came to my mind after reading this book. I am not one to read a lot of books, I choose to knit on my spare time which is usually after dinner or while a baseball game is on TV. And I do pay attention to the game!

The book I am speaking of is Note to Self by Samara O'Shea. This is not a book I would normally pick up, a thriller, action or humor interest. I figured, it seems to be a short read and why not since I have taken up blogging. Blogging is a form of journal writing, not with a pen but a key pad.

Samara's book at times did have me drift off, thinking about things that I need to do, such as back to my knitting or organize my daughter's toys. I caught myself once laughing out load to a journal entry about her ex-boyfriend, who is a comedian, writing a joke about their brake up, I know I am not the only one who laughed about this entry. But for the most part, I did feel a connection with what she was writing. She wrote about why, how and when to write in a journal and published her journal entries from her early age to writing for The Huffington Post. I had always written out "to do" lists but never thought of writing in them a journal, not just something for every day to do but long term goals and wish lists. Her book also made me realize why I blog and what I blog about. When I had finished this book, my first thought to blog about was when I started to master making a pie crust, telling everyone to stay out of the kitchen because expletives would be flying!
