Ovenbird commits suicide?

Is this suicide or just simple dumb luck? My father-in-law calls me to let me know a bird hit his sun room window a couple of days ago and was confirming the identification. I stopped over yesterday and saw it, did not pick it up but it looked like a wood thrush. His measurements on the length did not match this. Both have the spotted underbelly and and same brown back coloration. As I was sitting at my computer I was startled by a loud hit at the window next to me. Looked out on the ground and wouldn't you know it, the same bird! Coincidence? I went outside, took pictures, measured it at it was 6" in length, matches up to the Ovenbird! This bird was lucky and it eventually flew off.
Do they not want winter to come? Or just not paying attention to where they are flying? And just so you know, I am pretty sure this is the same bird that had been found dead after flying into the front door of their home last month. You be the judge........

Orange Kitty Update

I got a phone call on the way to Bugaboo Girl's swim class this morning that the orange kitten was adopted. Good for the kitty, not so good for me. It was a female, I did not know that female orange cats are extremely rare, 1 in a 1000! Who knew! Anyway, she has two siblings available, 8 weeks old but I think I have a another kitten I am going to go for tomorrow. It seems to be calling out to me more and more, a sign. I went to my grandmother's for lunch yesterday with Bugaboo Girl, she lives in as assisted living area near me. One of the women who works there and lives in town overheard me about the cat adoption ordeal and told me she had a 14 week old female kitten she was looking for someone to adopt, the last of a litter. It is a Maine Coon cat. I really think it is a sign and I am going to see her Saturday. Wish me luck!

Champagne Food Friday - Kitchen Giveaway

Do you know what a Tea Towel is? It is also known as a dish towel and according to Wikipedia, it is a cloth which is used to dry dishes after they have been washed. In 18th century England, a tea towel was a special linen drying cloth used by the mistress of the house to dry her precious and expensive china tea things. Servants were not trusted with such a delicate job due to they were considered to be clumsy or maybe even possibilities of pocketing the merchandise for themselves!

I love printed dish clothes whether they are old or new. My problem is making sure my husband does not use them to wipe the grill off or clean the kitchen floor after spilling something like tomato sauce! I am sure I am not the only one out there that has a husband who does this. I try and keep the nice Tea Towels away from my husband, a separate drawer. I found an Etsy Shop called artgoodies that makes very cute block print tea towels, ones to keep away from my husband and tomato sauce! Lisa works from two things I love which are nature and vintage items. Many of her block print patterns are birds, animals and an occasional unique item such as the ring towel. I had to show this one since my new sister-in-law just got married a couple of weeks ago. This would be a great gift for a bridal shower, housewarming or even someone who loves towels, such as myself! Lisa also makes block print stuffies, aprons and wall hangings, a little something for everyone to enjoy.

WIN IT!!!

Photo Greeting cards with a canine emphasis

I have a border collie and like most of this breed, they have a very quirky side which makes them photograph very well. The always have a slight craze look in their eye and yet show a sweet side you cannot resist. I found a greeting card shop, Four Dog Day, that has a captured this look and more!
Four Dog Day is an Etsy shop that sells greeting cards, prints, journals and more. It is a team relationship of a mom and her son who do the beautiful work. Kathy is the mother who makes the product and her son Matt takes the beautiful photographs of not only his dog Luna but of the Colorado landscape. My favorite dog photo is the Watching For Santa which portrays to me exactly what my dog shows when she has a mission in mind which patience and concentration. What would the dog when he showed up? Herd him right in to the house and stuff her nose in the sack sniffing out her present. What a great Christmas card to send out to a dog lover for the holidays.

The landscape photo cards take my breath away. They are calming, show interest and make me feel like I want to be there in person to see these majestic scenes. I thought I was not ready for winter yet but looking at these pictures make me want to talk a walk in the snow and anticipate the first snow fall.

WIN IT!!!

Four Dog Day has offered up one winner a choice of 3 greeting cards. See rules below.
1. Stop by Four Dog Day and gaze at their beautiful work. Post a comment on this post what is your favorite card.

The un-pleasant adoption continued.....

In case you missed the first part of the story, you can read it here. I wanted to post what happened, finally sat down to write it today.
I called the shelter at 9:30am on Monday, which they were open at 9am. No one answered and got a automatic message for leaving a voicemail. I left my name, phone number, the cat description along with the actual number they gave me, the info I filled out on the paperwork and to call me back. Remember, they were supposed to call my town tax assessors office to confirm I was a home owner, the whole reason I was not able to take the kitten home in the first place.
I went to my mom's for the day and about 1:30pm, I decided to call the shelter again to follow up(hmmmmm something they seem to need a lesson on). The person who answered the phone told me that they never got the message, no paperwork and also no notice to call on confirming my home. AND they adopted the kitten a couple of minutes ago!!!!!! So what would you do in this situation? I told her that I wanted to complain about her process, and since she was on the phone, she said I could complain to her. My points were....

  • Poor follow up
  • Just because a person owns a home does not make them a better cat owner
  • Why would you do this process on a Saturday if you know you cannot confirm the info with a town
  • Who carries around a mortgage statement or deed with them to prove this?
  • Very upsetting how this was handled

And this is what she had to say to me. "We will be getting more kittens in next week!". You're not getting the point are you.......I gave up and said that I will go somewhere else to adopt, never at your shelter who does not really care about the pairing of a pet with an owner.

So here I am looking for another kitten. I am going on petfinder today to look in my area.

When does a hobby become a job? It only becomes a job if you are not enjoying doing it. Sherrie Graham who runs Birch Bark Soap has made her hobby into a passion.

Birch Bark Soap is made from no animal fats, preservatives, synthetic colourings, parabens, pthalates, or sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates. I am fascinated with her combinations of scents such as Almond Biscotti Bath Bar, Sweet Birch Bath Bar and Peppermint Poppyseed Bath Bar. Sherrie even carries an Fragrance Free Baby Soap that is super gentle, mild and perfect for also sensitive skin! My favorite would have to be the Cafe Mocha Kitchen Soap made with coffee. I learned a new kitchen tip in that coffee helps in removing odors, such as garlic or fish, from the hands. Exfoliation from the coffee grounds will also leave your hands smooth and soft. That won me over since my hands are either in the garden or in dish water!

WIN IT!!!

Tackle it Tuesday

It happens every so many years. We have a gray water well and our septic is separate. The gray water well gets clogged up from this.

This is what happens right in my walkway going into my back door which in the winter time is not a good thing having a small skating rink here.

And this is what I am going to start with to try and fix this issue. If it does not work, we have to rent a very large plumbers snake! Let's hope this works, keep your fingers crossed for me!

A Passion for Pottery

I love pottery. I can attribute this to my mother. Ever since I was a little girl, I would go to antique shows with her while she was working her antique business. She started me collecting Fiesta by giving me pieces for holiday gifts such as a bowl with jellybeans for Easter or green plates for Christmas. Every once in a while I will find a different piece of pottery, something to use for social gatherings. I only have a few but they are special. DAH Ceramics has to me some special pieces that I would add to my collection.

If you know Fiesta, the appeal is not only the color but it is simple in design. This is what I love about DAH Ceramics. Dana has it down to what exactly I like which is she works with functionality and sculpture to make simple forms. I love this serving bowl with the contrast of the black and the green textured interior. This would be wonderful for the center of the table, fruit in the summer and gourds in the fall. As a serving piece, how about mashed sweet potatoes in it? I just love the contrast of color, it draws interest.

WIN IT!!!

DAH Ceramics has offered up one random winner your choice of any piece under $25! See rules below.

An un-pleasant experience with adoption

If you read my blog, you know that I lost my cat Mr. Martini, named after It's a Wonderful Life, about a month ago. For the past week I have been calling my local vet to see if they have gotten in any kittens......no such luck.
So here it is Saturday morning, Bugaboo and I drop of my husband at the local tractor auction while we are off to Walmart killing a little time and buying a new coffee grinder which broke that morning. We pull in and what do I see but a large van parked in front of Walmart with a very big cat statue next to it. I thought that this was a sign, we walked over to see who was the adoption van which it was a local shelter signing up for adoption of dogs and cats. Yea! This was my day! Bugaboo Girl and I waited in line to go in, there were about 9 cats and 4 kittens. One caught our eye, a 14 month tiger stripe male, took him out, got to hold him, Bugaboo Girl was already loving him. Right there I was ready to adopt.
We filled out the application, even was honest on the percentage of time inside and outside for the cat. If you have ever done this before, many shelters will NOT let you take a cat home if it is not 100% inside which I TOTALLY disagree with. But I was honest, could have put 100% but did not. So I am led over to the officer who reviews the application and she says to me "I need proof you own your home." I happen to have my electric bill on me, checkbook, licence, that was about it. But evidently that is not enough. She then looks at my application and calls her office to get my town's tax assessors phone number. Number one, it is a Saturday, no town is open and number two, she sis not even read my application because she was asking for a completely different town! She then realizes, the town office e is not open and asks me for a mortgage statement, which I do not have let alone who carries it with them! It was like they did not believe me. May I remind you, this is to adopt a kitten! Now I am starting to get upset and Bugaboo Girl is hungry and not as patient anymore. The officer then asks me if I have a copy of my deed! What? Who carries that document around in their handbag! But yet, people who rent only had to provide their landlords info for a call! What is wrong with this picture. O.k., so it is evident I am going to have to wait until Monday when they will call my tax assessors office to prove I own my home because evidently that makes me a better cat owner? But it gets better. I asked them if I would then be able to get the kitten once this is done and she said to me "IF someone else comes today qualified, they will be able to take him home!!! What!? I am in front of Walmart, welling up and ready to cry any minute. One of the shelter workers comes over to me and proceeds to tell me that this cat was on the news the day before for adoption and is a celebrity.......and that is suppose to make me feel better? I walked away with Bugaboo Girl, trying not to let her see me upset, but could not help it.
So Monday morning, I am calling the shelter first thing and telling them to call my assessors office at 9:30 am, then lets see what happens next! IF they still have this kitten and IF I can still have it once this process is over I will be writing a complaint letter.
