The State of CT is debating taxing shopping bags $0.05. The bill before the house is supposedly being introduced to curb the amount of bags in landfills but it is also obvious that the state wants to find another way to take in money to dump in the general fund. How will the regulate this one? I know a few small businesses which have the bags donated by the workers and owners, basically recycling the bags. Will they tax them? And what about retail clothing stores, will they be making us bring in our own bag to carry the clothes we buy? That is just a target for shoplifting, retailers get hit with millions of dollars every year on this theft. I think the lawmakers can look at other ways to curb this problem and not looking more at the money they can gain to spend on a program that was or will be cut.
